The Karawanken rise skywards like a huge, dividing wall. Although another boundary – the national border between Austria and Slovenia – runs along them, this mountain range is, in fact, a permeable place, where people have settled and gathered for thousands of years. Our journey begins in the Rosental, where work is underway on a project to reintroduce the bald ibis. The musician Tonc Feinig lets the landscape flow into his compositions. The communities on the Carinthian and Slovenian sides of the border have long-standing partnerships and are developing gentle tourism to preserve the region’s common heritage.
