In a South Memphis neighborhood long marked by disinvestment, an unexpected beacon of hope rises: a climbing gym built to serve the whole community. More than a place to scale walls, it’s a space where healing, resilience, and belonging take root. Through personal stories of transformation this short documentary captures the profound impact of a space built on access, dignity, and trust. Memphis Rox story is a testament to what’s possible when opportunity meets purpose in a place that refuses to be defined by struggle.
An important note from the director Glen Janssens:
“We’re heartbroken that our main character in Your Last Best was tragically shot and killed in South Memphis. Jarmond “Mon” Johnson was an incredible ambassador of kindness and love. He truly represented the mission of hope and change that is Memphis Rox. The entire community of South Memphis has responded and are rallying around Rox as they know that their mission is needed now more than ever.
We were blessed to premiere a version of Your Last Best at Mountainfilm (Telluride, USA). Jarmond was there to help introduce it on stage and to take it in, along with several of the team from Memphis Rox. The film has taken on a completely new context and we hope that it can be of service to the community of South Memphis and beyond.”
