Wenn die Alpen glühen

“Alpenglow”, that magnificent optical phenomenon that bathes the highest peaks in reddish light when the sun is just below the horizon, has taken on a new, rather more ominous meaning in recent years. The Alps are getting ever warmer, with dire consequences: As the permafrost that holds the steep, weathered terrain together melts, whole chunks of mountains come crashing down. Bark beetles devastate whole forests. Suffering under the heat and plagued by parasites, animals move to ever higher altitudes, where they eventually reach a limit. But the people living in these regions aren’t giving up: closing lift routes, securing summits, planting new forests and campaigning for a cleaner future, they are battling to preserve this high-altitude environment.
