Tribute to David Breashears

The alpinist and filmmaker David Breashears, who died unexpectedly this March at the age of 68, will be remembered by many as the man who brought the world’s highest mountains to cinemas in unprecedented image quality. In 1983, he was the first to transmit live TV images from the summit of Everest. Directing the IMAX film Everest, he again united state-of-the-art technology with superior mountaineering skills. Besides being involved in feature films, such as Cliffhanger and Seven Years in Tibet, Breashears authored several books, including Everest: Mountain without Mercy, in which he described the 1996 tragedy. His adventures have taken him to mountains throughout the world, with festival founder Robert Schauer accompanying him on some of his film expeditions.
