On Lithuania’s Curonian Spit, which separates the Curonian lagoon from the Baltic Sea, winter unfolds a special magic. This thin stretch of land boasts some of Europe’s highest dunes and over 50 kilometres of deserted beach. Wild boar and elk roam in its sandy expanse, taking advantage of the relative absence of humans. Meanwhile, scientists, fishermen, artists, forestry workers and a national park employee work to preserve the culture and nature of the spit, until approaching spring heralds the next round of human hustle and bustle.
