The Italian island of Sardinia has far more to offer than just dreamlike beaches: mighty karst mountains, gorges and spectacular rock towers right by the sea. In 2015, Alexander Huber established the route ‘Il Capitano’ at Capo Monte Santo, graded 8b+. The 40-meter-high cliff is slightly overhanging and so compact that it seems almost impossible to climb. Yet Alexander Huber came back to repeat his route – and to open new ones. He also meets his Sardinian friends to plan a joint trekking adventure. It is one of Italy’s most spectacular and demanding long-distance hikes: the ‘Selvaggio Blu’. The ‘Wild Blue’ unfolds in five stages along the Gulf of Orosei, through the wilderness of a sheer coastline hundreds of meters high, crisscrossed only by ancient shepherds’ and charcoal burners’ paths.
