We’re in Patagonia, at the east face of the Torre Central. Icy sleet whips the rock face. Far above, a small figure clings to the face, fists wedged in a crack, determinedly searching for a foothold. An impossible task? But wait: voices can be heard, swearing and cheering in French! It’s the big wall climber Siebe Vanhee, who persuaded Drew Smith, Nicolas Favresse and Sean Villanueva O’Driscoll to attempt the first free ascent of Riders on the Storm with him. So that’s okay: The climbing maybe tough, but don’t expect anyone to remain serious for long.
