This year marks the 70th anniversary of the conquest of Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Reinhold Messner, the first to climb all 14 peaks over 8000 meters without supplemental oxygen, observes the mountains transform into an immense playground before our very eyes. Mountaineering seems to have become just another commodity. This invasion of the world’s highest garbage dump is spreading across all of the 8000-meter peaks of the Himalayas. The neo-climbers are urbanising the mountains, and tourists from around the world are overrunning them. They generate pollution and cause an inexorable collapse of life.
