Bear Brother tells the story of Roberto Hartasรกnchez and his colleagues who have spent half a century fighting for the survival of Spainโs last brown bears. Just 50 years ago, illegal hunting and the fragmentation of their habitat rendered brown bears nearly extinct in Spain. Thatโs when Roberto Hartasรกnchez and his friends decided to act: To prevent the bearsโ extinction in northern Spain, they founded FAPAS, an independent organization that works to secure regionโs viability as a habitat for brown bears and other species. Thanks to their effort, about 400 bears live in the area today, but according to Roberto, they are still at risk of extinction, as their genetic variability is insufficient for their survival. Roberto and his friends also document and investigate illegal killings by poachers. Shining a spotlight on the bearsโ plight, FAPAS is a thorn in the side of the local government, which, intent on maintaining the regionโs positive image, claims that bear poaching is not an issue.
