Glaciers are melting – yet ski tourism must survive. As early as August, glacier remnants are removed in Sölden and relocated, debris is cleared away to create perfect slopes, and tons of artificial snow are added. Other lift operators, such as those in the nearby Pitztal, are planning new lift installations in protected wilderness areas to make them more attractive to tourists. Although the five glaciers in Tyrol are under strict protection, the tourism lobby has ensured that the glacier ski resorts are exempt. After all, the economic survival of an entire region is at stake. We have spoken with ski racers, lift operators and authorities as well as conservationists who are fighting to protect the last paradises in the Alps.
